Astroclimatic condition on Suffa plateau.
Region and a platform for the construction of the RT-70 radio telescope were chosen by the expedition, equipped with complex devices for measuring the level of interference, from the perspectives of development, highlands, infrastructure, astroclimate and feasibility of construction. Searches were carried out for 5 years. The State Commission approved the construction site on a high plateau Suffa, located at an altitude of 2500 meters above the sea level in the northern spurs of the Turkestan Range in Uzbekistan. On the plateau there is no industrial radio interference. At this site for 10 years operated a weather monitoring station, which carried out measurements of surface atmospheric parameters at standard altitudes and planned launches of balloons and balloon pilots. According to the atmospheric own radiation at a wavelength of 8 mm, was found the dependence of the amount of absorption depending on the surface moisture. Occasionally on the plateau were measured MS. The figures show the results.

Estimation of the cloudiness was determined by the standard method adopted in the Russian Hydro meteorological Service. Observations were made using the three hour interval program. The sky was supposed to be clear during the observations if cloudiness was not more than 2 points (if the sky is covered with clouds completely – 10 points). Amount of water precipitation was calculated by the upper-air measurements, and during their absence – according to the surface humidity using a calibration curve. For winter: 5% of all measurements were better than 1.8 mm, and 50% better than 4.8 mm precipitated water, in summer – 9.5 and 12.5 mm, respectively. Suffa plateau is sufficiently flat, in terms of a triangular shape with a height of 5 km and 1.5 km of the middle line, surrounded with almost all sides by not high mountains. On the south side at a distance of about 10 km is the Turkestan Range. Closing of the horizon ranges from –4o in the north up to 9o (maximum value within 1o in the horizontal direction) in the south. This arrangement of plateau provides a low interference and low wind speed (average 2.5 m/s), which are one of the basic conditions for large radio telescope.
