Scientific achievements of Igor Novikov are as follows:
- 1964: First prediction that the intensity of the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation (CMB, relict of the Hot Universe at the beginning of the Big Bang) is much higher than the intensity of all other sources of radiation in the Universe in the radio band. Prediction that this radiation can be discovered, which was indeed accomplished during the next year.
- 1964: First conjecture that the main 'engine' of a quasar (quasars are the most powerful sources of energy in the Universe) is a super massive black hole located in the center, with gas accretion onto it, and first estimates of the mass of the central black hole.
- 1965: Proof that all properties of uncharged black holes are completely determined by the mass and angular momentum of it. This derivation forms the basis of the modern physics of black holes. 1966: Novikov predicted that black holes in close binary systems must radiate x-rays, thus making them possible to be discovered. Indeed, a black hole was discovered in a binary system in 1972. Novikov created a theory of relativistic gas accretion onto black holes (1972, 1992-2009); theories of the origin of primordial black holes (1966-1994); theories of the tidal interaction of stars with black holes, and of black holes collisions (1991-2009).
- 2004: Theory of Wormholes (2004-2009).
- 1967: One of the first theories of the origin of galaxies from small primordial perturbrations (developed further in 1967-1998).
- 1977: Theory of the anisotropy of CMB. Modern development of the theory with applications to the observations from space and ground based telescopes (1997-2009).
